Robert Goodwill, MP for Scarborough & Whitby, visited Sainsbury’s Scarborough on Friday 10th January as the team highlighted their upcoming community plans for 2014.
He met with colleagues to find out how the store supports their Local Charity Partner, ‘Scarborough and District Mencap’ and their Food Donation partner ‘The Rainbow Centre.’ Surplus bakery items are donated on a weekly basis to the charity.
Scarborough District Mencap was announced in June as the store’s Local Charity Partner, following customer votes in May. The charity works in partnership with people with a learning disability. So far this year, the store has raised over £1,500 thanks to a coffee morning, Christmas fair, and a colleague bike ride. Colleagues will also be holding an Easter raffle to raise further funds.
The store has recently undergone a 26,000 sq ft extension, employing 120 new colleagues across the store’s and General Merchandise departments, and also in the new customer restaurant.
Store Manager, Rob Brookes, said: “Sainsbury’s prides itself on being a great place to work and we were proud to show Robert how active we are in the local community”.
Robert added "It’s great to meet the team at Sainsbury's Scarborough and hear about their upcoming plans to support the local community. In particular, I was interested to hear about their work with charities, as I know that Scarborough District Mencap do fantastic work with the support of the store.”
