Mike Padgham, chair of the Independent Care Group for York and North Yorkshire, invited Robert Goodwill to his own care home, St Cecilia’s, in Stepney Road, for National Care Home Open Day on Friday.
He used the visit as an opportunity to lobby Mr Goodwill on the difficulties facing the care of older and vulnerable people in the area and beyond.
The MP has promised to set up a meeting between Mr Padgham, Norman Lamb, Minister for Social Care and Support, and Michael Fallon, Minister for Business and Enterprise to discuss the issue.
Mr Padgham said the Government needed to acknowledge the huge economic and human impact social care has on the country.
He also warned that further cuts to local authorities in the Government’s June 26 Spending Review would hurt the provision of social care to older and vulnerable people even more.
“Since 2011 councils have cut £2.7 billion from their social care budgets and worse still a further £800 million is to be cut in the year ahead,” he said. “That can only mean that people are going to go without the care they need and the quality that is provided will suffer. I would relish the opportunity to press the case for social care to the two ministers most involved.”
