MP comments on broadband announcement
North Yorkshire County Council has selected BT to roll-out high speed broadband across the County.
The telecoms firm are promising 90pc of premises will receive greater than 25MBs downstream and 5MBs upstream with 100pc of premises receiving between 2MBs and 25MBs, by 2015.
Robert Goodwill Member of Parliament for Scarborough and Whitby said:
“This contract being awarded marks an important moment in our Broadband North Yorkshire campaign which is backed by every Member of Parliament in North Yorkshire and York.
“Our aim is to ensure homes and businesses across Scarborough and Whitby receive better connections to the internet to allow them to work, learn and play without having to leave the area.
“For too long there has been a growing digital divide between urban and rural communities. This award, and the work to roll-out high speed broadband in the coming months and years, will ensure that divide narrows rather than continues to grow.
“Labour promised to roll-out superfast broadband by 2017 – this announcement means the Government will deliver on this promise two years ahead of that plan.
“I will be putting pressure on BT and North Yorkshire County Council to deliver on their promises for my constituents as soon as possible.”
