He said, “Armed Forces’ day is an opportunity for the nation to show its support and say thank you to all the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community. Also aims to help raise awareness and understanding of the role of the Royal Navy, the Army, the Royal Air Force, reservists, veterans, cadets and the wider Armed Forces’ family in society”.
It was spectacular day with major attractions including an RAF Typhoon aerobatic display, the Red Arrows and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight with a Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster flying in formation. Around 30,000 people thronged the sea front. A similar event also took place in Whitby with the main national event, attended by Philip Hammond the Defence Secretary, in Nottingham. The Prime Minister spent the day with our forces in Afghanistan.
